☹️ City Frowns Upon Ocean Beach HOA Selective Enforcement
A recent city notice has officially flagged the building at 825, 855, 875 La Playa St. for failing to remove graffiti—a violation of local ordinances.
This comes after months of the HOA tattling to the city on residents for harmless chalk drawings, like smiley faces on public sidewalks, which racked up $15,000+ in attorney fees for ordinary, innocent fun.
Complaints about this graffiti and other issues were even reframed as “harassment” by the HOA.
The city notice provides official, third-party confirmation of what many residents have been experiencing firsthand: the HOA enforces rules selectively, targeting trivial actions while ignoring clear violations.
Photo below: city notice and graffiti. The graffiti has been left on the building for months on end. The city notice cites the graffiti on the 825 La Playa St North emergency exit, in addition to the graffiti the city presumably missed — that has remained on the building’s west facing walls for months.

The city notice is literally taped to the wall with painters tape — using the HOA’s own logic, that could count as property destruction. Meanwhile, residents have been subjected to fines/fees totaling nearly $15,000 for harmless chalk on public sidewalks.

I Tried to look up the graffiti notice on the City’s website… and was greeted by a stack trace instead of details.
Nothing says ‘we’re on top of graffiti enforcement’ quite like a NullPointerException.
Bonus points if you can debug their workflow before your potted plants get confiscated.
