Safeway Shakeup: Housing, Closure, and Community Outcry

Play

Big news for S.F.: Align Real Estate just dropped a major redevelopment plan on the city — and Safeway is at the center of it. The supermarket at 850 La Playa Street in the Outer Richmond would be slated for a temporary shutdown as developers propose building 526 new apartments, mostly market-rate, with a newly reimagined Safeway on the ground floor.

But not everyone’s thrilled. Neighbors in the Outer Richmond are furious: this Safeway isn’t just a grocery store — for some, it’s the only full-service market nearby, and its temporary loss has people scrambling.
